Living Artfully

Today, and for the past two days I have been welcoming visitors to my studio for the Sedona region open studios tour and sale. This is something I have done regularly over the years : going all the way back to one year in February many moons ago when I was bored, and wanted a project. At the time, I was living in NY state, and they were a fairly new concept. I got many artists on board , with many disciplines...and everyone had a blast. These days they are much more common, but people still enjoy going around to various work spaces, and meeting the artists. Sales are important, of course. Perhaps more so,  it is a great way to meet area residents and visitors, and tell them about what I do when I am tucked away in my back studio space. I am a bit off of the beaten path, but people tell me that the trek is worth it. We live on a hillside, with views of the surrounding high desert, and some of the Sedona rock formations. All this past week, I have been painting in the Sedona Plein Air Festival. "Sun down, Lights Up" is one of my favorite pieces from the week. Well, I'm back in the studio today, tired and happy for the experience.  I would like to share with you  just what it was like as a participant. It opened on Saturday with a welcome, orientation maps and goodies, and a delicious brunch for the artists. We were asked to bring about six works to hang in the gallery, in our own designated spot. I saw many old friends, and a lot of new faces from all over the US; even a young lady from upstate NY....the old stomping grounds.We had a few free days of painting before the organized spots for the public to observe. I found a dry place to paint my first one...which I did not finish...it rained quite hard! Then, I went home, which is about 18 miles away,  to change for the opening of the showing of our studio, or previously done pieces. "Silver Springs Field", pastel,...

All this coming week, I'll be participating in the Sedona Plein Air Festival. It is an opportunity to see old friends,  meet new people, both artists and collectors, and to produce a body of work from having painted all week long. Many are free and open to the public. I really do enjoy all of that aspect. however, I find that the process of producing a concentrated body of work really helps to bump up the work. Making a consistent effort to get out there every day has a way of pulling something out that doesn't always happen when I go out every few days, or less frequently. It may be the focus and concentration. This week may be foggy, cloudy and rainy...not at all like our usual Arizona weather. Fortunately, for me, I have had many day...

This morning I went out to paint in preparation for the Sedona Plein Air Festival, which starts on Saturday, and runs all week long. Even though it was damp, rainy and chilly, I wanted to get in to the plein air painting mode . Not the most ideal circumstances, but it was good to get out for a couple of hours. This morning I grabbed my pastels , and set up right in my on yard to paint. After last evening's storm, the clouds are just wonderful.
